Personal Training: Baby Boomers Boost Business

May 28, 2007 by PFI

Most people are familiar with the term “Baby Boomer”, yet recent studies show fitness professionals will get to know them much more in the next decade. This generation, (born between 1946 and 1964 and represents the largest segment of the US population) that has consistently defied social and cultural norms, will now try to defy scientific standards as well.

A recent survey done of this age group said that 85% of those surveyed strongly believed they would live longer if they remained physically active in retirement and 88% strongly believed they would be happier. Even better news is that 93% of them expect to exercise the same amount or even more when retired. 85% of those surveyed said they are in good to excellent health now with 63% expecting to be in better health in retirement than their parents were when they retired.

So what does that mean for the fitness profession? According to the International Health, Racquet and Sportsclub Association(www.ihrsa.org), baby boomers are banging down the door at health clubs around the country. The group says the number of health club members over 55 grew by 343% from 1987 to 2003, and people in the 35-54 age group increased by 180%. This correlates to more opportunity than ever to start a career earning a personal training certification. The U.S. Department of Labor also shows that the personal training industry will increase by over 27% by the year 2014, with opportunity and yearly income increasing as well.

So is becoming a personal trainer the profession for you? Being an NSCA Certified Personal Trainer can open up the door to great opportunities, great job satisfaction, and great fulfillment in life.
